Metacafe Encourages Online Video Viewers to Personalize their Entertainment Experience with New Creativity Toolkit from PLYmedia

Leading Short-Form Video Entertainment Site Enables Viewers to Add Dialog Bubbles, Photos, Webcam Video, Clip Art and Subtitles to Customize Video Clips and Share them with Friends

Palo Alto, CA – July 29, 2008 – Metacafe®, whose more than 30 million unique viewers each month make it one of the world’s largest video entertainment sites, now enables viewers to personalize their entertainment experiences by adding dialog bubbles, photos, webcam video, clip art, subtitles and more to online videos. These viewers turned co-creators can save their work for the enjoyment of other members of the Metacafe community and can share their personalized clips with friends via e-mail. This creativity toolkit, called PLYfx, is powered by PLYmedia, a pioneer in content enrichment web services and tools which enable interactivity and enrichment of web videos.

“The power of online video centers on the ability for viewers to interact with content and control their own entertainment experiences,” said Eyal Hertzog, founder and chief creative officer of Metacafe. “This toolkit builds on these core principles and makes it easy for everyone to stretch their creative muscles and produce videos that reflect their original ideas, personal style and mood of the moment. This is yet another way we’re breaking down the barriers to creative expression and infusing more fun into social media.”

Now available as part of a beta test, registered users of Metacafe can enable PLYfx by visiting http://blog.metacafe.com/?p=165 and clicking on the “Enable PLYfx” button. When watching a video on Metacafe, these users can now click on the PLYfx button that appears in the upper left corner of the video player. An intuitive drop-down menu appears that leads users through the process of personalizing the video by adding images and text, enabling them to share thoughts, add characters, create a dialog or extend the storyline. Viewers can also add subtitles, enabling people who speak different languages or those who are hearing-impaired to enjoy the video in a way not previously possible.

The original video remains unaltered. Metacafe viewers can save a library of their customized creations, which are accessible to other viewers, and can send these creations to their friends via e-mail or embed their creation directly from the PLYfx application within the video player. Each new PLYfx creation is assigned a unique URL, which enables its creator to promote the work elsewhere.

“Lots of people have ideas they’d love to bring to life in video, but the process of shooting, editing and uploading a video is still fairly time-consuming and labor-intensive,” said Ben Enosh, CEO of PLYmedia. “Our platform makes it quick and easy for people to bring their creative visions to life by building on existing videos. This creativity toolkit encourages more participation, cooperation and interaction among members of the Metacafe community – enhancing both the individual and shared entertainment experience.”

Short-Form Videos Dominate Online Viewing

Frank N. Magid Associates Study Reveals Consumer Behavior and Preferences in Online Video

Palo Alto, CA – July 24, 2008 – Frank N. Magid Associates, the world leader in research-based consultation, and Metacafe®, whose more than 30 million unique viewers each month make it one of the world’s largest video entertainment sites, today released survey results revealing consumer behavior and preferences in online video viewing. Notably, the survey found that the top-five most popular categories of videos watched online are all short-form: comedy, music videos, videos shot and uploaded by consumers, news stories and movie previews.

“Online video has quickly become not only a mainstream cultural phenomena but also a powerful marketing vehicle for brands that want to reach consumers who no longer watch as much television – and even fewer TV commercials,” said Mike Vorhaus, managing director of Frank N. Magid Associates. “There’s clearly a big consumer appetite for snack-sized content, and we expect the trend towards more advertising dollars moving online – specifically to sites specializing in short-form video entertainment – to continue and accelerate in the coming months and years.”

The national study, conducted by Frank N. Magid Associates’ online research division SurveysOnline.com, surveyed nearly 2,000 people between the ages of 12 and 64 with gender, age and ethnicity representations matching those of the U.S. census.

Key findings include:
• 50% of all respondents watch online video weekly.
• 11% of all respondents watch online video daily.
• 28% of those who watch online videos report watching less TV as a result.
• 19% of those who watch online videos report regularly sharing a link to a video with someone else.
• The top-five most commonly viewed types of online video content, based on respondents reporting that they watch regularly, are:

  • Comedy/jokes/bloopers (37%)
  • Music videos (36%)
  • Videos shot and uploaded by consumers (33%)
  • News stories (31%)
  • Movie previews (28%)

This research is part of the Magid Media FuturesTM Practice, which surveys consumers annually to identify trends and help clients implement product and marketing strategies that address them. The online video portion of this year’s study was sponsored by Metacafe.

“Short-form video is an emerging entertainment genre – distinct from online TV – that consistently proves popular with people of widely varying backgrounds and tastes, as demonstrated yet again by the Magid survey,” said Erick Hachenburg, CEO of Metacafe. “Online TV, or traditional networks distributing their shows on the Internet, is really just the same long-form programs, with the same audience, supported by the same advertisements – only the delivery platform is different. We’re excited about the new and growing opportunity short-form video entertainment presents, and we’re committed to growing our leadership in this sector.”

Metacafe and Microcinema International Launch MetaFest 2008

Filed under: Metacafe Press, Metacafe Press Releases — The Metacafe Team @ 12:05 am

Juried Online-Offline Film Festival Presenting the Best in International Creative and Contemporary Short-Form Video Entertainment

Palo Alto, CA – July 17, 2008 –
Metacafe®, whose nearly 30 million unique viewers each month make it one of the world’s largest video entertainment sites, and Microcinema International, a leading international rights manager, exhibitor and specialty markets distributor of the “moving image arts,” are teaming to create and curate MetaFest 2008. MetaFest is a juried online and offline film festival presenting the best in international creative and contemporary short-form video entertainment.

The MetaFest call for entries, which opens today, invites short video, film and digital media submissions of 10 minutes or less that are narrative, humorous, artistic, dramatic, animated, documentary, mockumentary, music, experimental, alternative or avant-garde in any genre, format or style. Films that demonstrate engaging storytelling, innovative presentation, creative expression, and bridge the worlds of online and offline entertainment in a unique and compelling way are preferred. Additional details are available at www.metacafe.com/metafest, where films can be uploaded for consideration through September 10th, 2008.

The MetaFest jury includes Hillman Curtis, an award-winning filmmaker, designer and author whose books include “Creating Short Films for the Web,” and Glenn R. Phillips, who is senior project specialist and consulting curator of contemporary programs for the Getty Research Institute and recently curated the “California Video” exhibition.

“Short-form video is a rapidly emerging entertainment genre, and content creators – independent filmmakers to boutique production firms and major media companies – are beginning to make highly entertaining, innovative works well-suited to the online medium,” said Mark Poggi, senior manager of content marketing for Metacafe. “We expect MetaFest to showcase some truly original short films that tell great stories, feature quality production values and use technology creatively.”

MetaFest combines the best of the interactive online video-viewing experience with the best of the live-audience offline film festival experience. Selected films will have a theatrical premiere in San Francisco in November 2008, will be showcased on Metacafe.com for six months, and be screened at dozens of “microcinema” events across the U.S. and around the world through the first half of 2009.

“This is an exciting time to be a filmmaker, as the Internet has opened up a much greater distribution opportunity for short films and helped foster a large and growing audience seeking out and enjoying this content,” said Patrick Kwiatkowski, co-founder and CEO of Microcinema International. “MetaFest is designed to help talented creators gain additional exposure and build their fanbase worldwide by combining the best of both the online and offline worlds.”

The jury will select a grand prize winner who will be awarded $5,000 cash and a “short-short” award winner for outstanding work in a video of three minutes or less who will receive $2,000 cash. Two audience-choice award winners – one selected at the theatrical premiere and one selected by Metacafe viewers – will receive $1,000 each as well as DVD selections worth $250 from the Microcinema DVD catalog. All award winners will be prominently featured on the Metacafe home page for 10 days and receive additional exposure through marketing and publicity efforts. Additionally, the creator of each film selected for the MetaFest offline program will receive a cash honorarium of $50. Creators of MetaFest entries that meet the program requirements for the Metacafe Producer Rewards® program are eligible to be paid for their work at the rate of $5 per 1,000 views.

MetaFest sponsorships are currently being developed with leading brands interested in leveraging short-form video and social media to build awareness and engagement with a targeted audience of filmmakers and entertainment enthusiasts.
