Metacafe’s Producer Rewards™ Program Shares the Wealth with Short Video Creators

Top eighteen creators have earned between $5,000 and $26,000 each based on total views of their short videos on the Metacafe site

Palo Alto, CA – February 28, 2007 – Metacafe, one of the world’s largest video sites, today announced that the Producer Rewards™ program continues to deliver unprecedented earnings and visibility for content creators around the world. Nearly four months after going live, Producer Rewards videos have been seen more than 50 million times. The top 18 creators have earned more than $5,000 each, and three creators have taken home more than $20,000 apiece.

Metacafe’s service ranks uploaded videos by popularity and feedback from a community of 17 million monthly visitors – and pays the creators for the success of their work. The auteurs get $100 after 20,000 viewings and $5 for every 1,000 subsequent views. Since September, Metacafe has paid a total of $250,000 to 200 contributors.

Allyson Campa, the vice president of marketing for Metacafe in Palo Alto, Calif., said the site, which shares advertising revenue with its producers, routinely recruits contributors from other video sites.

“We don’t have a specific strategy to poach specific creators, but we’ve certainly increased our emphasis on getting the word out and letting creators know we have a great system,” she said.

All the World’s a Stage (That Includes the Internet)

Mr. Raphaeli’s stage of choice is the Internet, where he has posted 30 short video clips to Metacafe, a Web site that pays video creators based on how many viewers their work attracts. So far, Mr. Raphaeli has earned more than $13,000 from the site, where his most popular card trick has been seen 1.4 million times.

As video sites look for ways to attract higher-quality content, they are dangling cash, usually offering to cut creators in on the advertising revenue their work generates.

Paying Users for Content

The idea to pay users for their content is not a new one as Metacafe.com, a similar site to YouTube, also rewards those that upload clips. The site’s Producer Rewards programme was launched last October and pays creators $5 for every 1000 views of their video clip. One user of the site, Joe Eigo, has earned $25,000 since posting a clip of his martial arts acrobatics.
