Video site Metacafe was the fourth most searched-for term on Google in 2006 according to Google Zeitgeist
Palo Alto, CA – December 20, 2006 – Metacafe, the world’s largest independent video site, today announced that Metacafe was the fourth most searched-for term on Google in 2006. Based on the most popular search terms of the year, Metacafe ranks alongside ‘World Cup’ and higher than ‘wikipedia’ and even the term ‘video’. No other video entertainment destination site made the Google Zeitgeist top ten list.

Top 5 video creators take home over $10,000 each
Palo Alto, CA – December 6, 2006 – Metacafe, the world’s largest independent video site, today announced that one month after going live, the Producer Rewards™ program has delivered significant earnings and visibility for content creators around the world. Producer Rewards videos have been seen more than 19 million times, and the top five creators have earned more than $10,000 each.
Launched on October 30, 2006, the Producer Rewards program pays creators $5 for every 1,000 views of their video clips on Metacafe.com in exchange for the non-exclusive right to distribute their work on any platform. Clips on Metacafe begin earning money once they exceed 20,000 views and a 3.0 rating. Viewers do not have to click on an advertisement for creators to receive compensation.

The six high-earning Metacafe creators have a lot in common; they all make tapes of personal talents, whether it’s origami, massage, or magic tricks. The highest earner, at $24,885, is a single video5 (above) of an amazingly talented gymnast. The other creators seem to have their earnings more evenly spread across regularly submitted contributions.

“We were hoping to get 1000 videos accounting for 10 percent of our total traffic by end of 2006,” Czerniak told us. “We are now getting about 300 videos being uploaded a day, and the producer rewards program already accounts for 8 percent of our total traffic.” The company is getting between 1.2-to-1.5 million unique visitors a day, he says.
