Metacafe Launches Producer Rewards™ for Short Video Creators

Metacafe is now the best place on the web for video creators to reach a huge audience and profit from their great work

Palo Alto, CA – October 30, 2006 – Metacafe, the world’s largest independent video site, today launched Producer Rewards™, a new program that helps video creators gain recognition and earn money for their best work. Beginning today, creators can collect $5 for every 1,000 views of their video clip on Metacafe in exchange for the non-exclusive right to distribute their work on any platform.

Any Producer Rewards video can skyrocket to the Metacafe front page based solely on content quality as determined by Metacafe’s proprietary VideoRank™ technology. Metacafe attracts a global audience of nearly 17 million viewers every month, and the Top 200 videos on Metacafe receive more views than the Top 200 videos on video sharing site YouTube.

“Anyone can upload a clip to the web, but it remains extremely difficult to attract viewers and make money,” said Arik Czerniak, co-founder and CEO of Metacafe. “Metacafe’s Producer Rewards introduces a straightforward payment program and a fast path to a global audience that relies solely on the quality of your work.”

Metacafe CEO – time to pay up

This is an interview with Bambi Francisco from MarketWatch

As measured by the time spent on a site, Metacafe is the No. 1 independent video-sharing site, now that YoUTube is part of Goodle (goog). The site generated 1.8 million unique visitors in August, and its users spent 25 minutes on the site in that period. YouTube’s audience spends about 33 minutesm according to Neilsen//NetRatings.

Metacafe CEO and founder Arik Czerniak tells me that Metacafe has always tried to encourage volunteers to review and rank the videos. It’s this policy of getting the community to participate that’s probably helped the time-spent metric for the company.

Metacafe’s Pay Scheme Goes Live

Originally published on Reel Pop Blog:

Back in my day, we didn’t get paid when someone watched our home videos. No, and we also had to walk uphill to school. Both ways. With boards nailed to our feet for shoes. But times have changed. These days, that endearing video you took of Aunt Irma breaking her clavicle while doing the funky chicken can earn you some serious cake.

To wit: Metacafe is going public today with its Producer Rewards program, which pays you $5 for every 1,000 views your videos get. Small print: Payment starts after 20,000 views ($100), and the video has to earn a minimum rating of three out of five stars. According to CEO Arik Czerniak, videos can get 20,000 views in just a few hours. Up until today, the Producer Rewards plan was only available on a limited basis.

Don’t I Know You from the Internet?

Another great article about Metacafe from Business Week:

Joe Eigo, the 26-year-old Toronto native began making demo tapes of his acrobatic fighting style to send to action movie producers. But it wasn’t until he put the videos on the Internet that he received any significant attention – or money – for his work.

Two months ago, he sent one of his tapes, Matrix for Real, to Metacafe. It has since been viewed 4.5 million times on Metacafe alone and has earned Eigo $23,000 in licensing fees. “The Internet is really the way to go,” says Eigo. “There are no borders like when watching television. You have access to the world.”

Runner-Up Takes on YouTube

Check out this great article from Wired:

“YouTube may be the king of online video, but if Arik Czerniak has his way, the king won’t stay on the throne for long.

“People who watch video on the web are hungry for good content, and they are ready to consume a lot of it,” says Czerniak. “You could put your video on YouTube and get a lot of views, but you have to actively market yourself in order to be heard over allthe noise. Or, you could post it to Metacafe where we have developed a process that lets the best videos get played immediately so they can start earning you real money.”

Metacafe Inc. was founded three years ago at the height of the recession, so to speak. The company has developeed a technology that has institutionalized a custom that has become popular in recent years – circulating brief video clips, both humorous and frightening, amond friends and colleagues. Its technology, which also offers software for downloading, enables users to filter and rate new content thanks to its own screening engine.
