Independent Video Creators Earn $1 Million on Metacafe

December 12th, 2007 by The Metacafe Team
Producer Rewards® Reaches Milestone Faster
than Any Other Payment Program in the Online Video Entertainment Industry

Palo Alto, CA – December 12, 2007 – Metacafe®, whose more than 30 million unique viewers each month make it one of the world’s largest video entertainment sites, is celebrating the success of its Producer Rewards® program, which pays video creators for their best original work as judged by the audience. More than 550 people have now collectively earned more than $1 million since the program’s launch on October 30th, 2006. Reaching this important milestone in just over a year makes Producer Rewards the leading payment program for independent video creators.

“Metacafe is hands-down the best place for talented people making entertaining short videos to showcase their work,” said Erick Hachenburg, CEO of Metacafe. “We help them reach a large and global audience. Our unique approach to audience-driven programming ensures that those videos our viewers find most entertaining automatically receive exposure. And Producer Rewards pays creators based on positive response from the audience.”

Since the program’s inception:
• The top-earning producer has made more than $80,000.
• Seven people have each earned more than $20,000.
• 21 people have each earned more than $10,000.
• 44 people have each earned more than $5,000.

To celebrate 2007 and the million-dollar milestone, Metacafe is currently featuring the “Best of Producer Rewards” channel, showcasing a countdown of the year’s top-earning videos. The countdown is now underway at www.metacafe.com/bestof07.

Among the most popular genres on Metacafe are:
• MacGyver-inspired how-to videos that bring out the super secret agent in all of us and provide hours of amusement using everyday household products;
• Amazing human stunt videos ranging from break-dancing babies to death-defying urban performance artists to fast-footed soccer specialists;
• Entertaining educational videos that teach you how to do anything from give a great massage to tune-up your computer skills; and
• Laugh-out-loud funny videos, scripted or spontaneous, that deliver a punch in a matter of moments.

“If you would have told me this time last year that I’d have an extra $80,000 in my pocket from making videos, I would have laughed out loud,” said “Kipkay,” Metacafe’s top earner. “Of course, the money’s not actually burning a hole in my pocket. I’ve used it to help pay my kids’ college tuition, make some home improvements, and take my wife to Las Vegas for a week. Making the videos is good fun in its own right. Making the money is a great bonus.”

The Metacafe Producer Rewards program is open to any creator of an original short video, and the payment system is simple and straightforward – $5 for every 1,000 views, starting at the 20,000 views mark. More information about the program is available at http://studio.metacafe.com/producer_rewards/.

In addition to submitting music videos, fans can go to the MTV’s Virtual Worlds channel on Metacafe to check out and vote for their favorites.

Featured artists and songs include: Saves the Day – “Can’t Stay the Same;” A Cursive Memory – “Everything;” Dannel Vonn Dillon – “Worn and of Plastic;” Dr. Manhattan – “Big Chomper;” Grayskul – “Us.”

Everything on Digg is submitted and voted on by the Digg community, making it easy for people to discover and share interesting items from anywhere on the web. Palo Alto, CA – August 21, 2007 – Metacafe, whose more than 25 million unique viewers each month make it one of the world’s largest video sites (comScore Media Metrix, June 2007), today announced it has raised $30 million in Series C financing.  The round was led by new investors Highland Capital Partners and DAG Ventures. Existing investors Accel Partners and Benchmark Capital also participated.

“Metacafe is defining the next generation of online video, moving away from simple video sharing and hosting to delivering an exceptional entertainment experience for short-form content,” said Richard de Silva, Partner, Highland Capital Partners.  “Its sophisticated approach to audience-driven programming is unique in the industry.”

“Over the past four years Metacafe has built a large and global audience, which has grown quite significantly throughout 2007,” said Tom Goodrich, Partner, DAG Ventures.  “We expect the growth to continue as Metacafe rolls out new ways of tapping its community to customize the viewing experience for audience members in different regions around the world.”

The money raised will be used to support the company’s continued global growth, including expanding the breadth and depth of content – from  emerging video creators through the Producer RewardsTM program and through partnerships with established media companies.

With their firms’ investments, both Richard de Silva of Highland Capital Partners and Tom Goodrich of DAG Ventures will join the Metacafe board of directors.  With the close of this round, co-founder Arik Czerniak will step away from day-to-day operations to pursue other entrepreneurial endeavors but will remain on the board and continue to advise the company on strategic matters.

“This financing underscores the strength of the Metacafe value proposition and bolsters our ability to reach entertainment enthusiasts, video creators, content providers and brand advertisers across the globe,” said Erick Hachenburg, CEO, Metacafe.  “By working closely with each of these groups and putting our community at the forefront of everything we do, Metacafe is delivering an unmatched online entertainment experience.”

August 8th, 2007 by The Metacafe Team

Palo Alto, CA – August 7, 2007 – Metacafe, one of the world’s largest video sites, is making its entertainment content available to the over 220 million Skype™ users around the world, enabling them to express their mood in video and easily share favorite videos with friends. The companies teamed up to integrate this capability into Skype 3.5 for Windows, which launches today.

“The content featured on Metacafe is there because our audience finds it entertaining, with the most popular original videos showcased in our Producer RewardsTM program,” said Erick Hachenburg, CEO of Metacafe.  “We’re focused on short-format videos – bite-sized entertainment snacks that are well-suited to mood messages and sharing with Skype contacts ready for an entertainment break in their day.”

Skype 3.5 for Windows users who want to personalize their online profile with video or add video to an online chat can to choose from hundreds of thousands of videos available from Metacafe, across a broad array of genres.  They can also create their own video and upload it to Metacafe, where it can be seen by 25 million viewers and potentially earn money through the Producer Rewards program.

“People thrive on sharing stuff with one another.  A little over a year ago, we had 100 million registered users worldwide and we’ve more than doubled in size in the space of twelve months.  This is because we continue to develop Skype and come up with amusing to do.   User-generated and licensed video content are incredibly popular.  Working with Dailymotion and Metacafe means everyone can try out downloading their favourite clip and putting it in their online profile.  Video content is a great conversation starter because people love talking about video clips and especially the ones that are personal to them,” said Carter Adamson, general manager, desktop products for Skype.
